I received an email a year later from the family, saying Grandma asked for "her Jazz Band" when we brought out dessert and everyone laughed! You can do it too.

A Workout For Your Brain with Music Education

We all know how important it is to stay physically healthy. I like to run. What about you? Spinning, pilates? Exercises for your body is great but when is the last time you worked out your brain?

No, I am not talking about complex math equations or in-depth written exams.

At Victoria Opera House, we provide a brain workout that stimulates memory and happiness. That sounds much better, don’t you think? Today, we are going to take a look at music education and the different ways we offer a fun and musical experience for your brain and your body.

Who is this for?

Anyone can take a music education class or learn an instrument, which is also a creative way to keep your brain flexible. Our musical instrument and singing experiences as well as our music history classes are taught by professionals in the industry, in multiple languages, and are suitable for ages 2 to 99. When you reach 100, I want to take a class from you!

Our music education classes are very popular among the corporate circuit. It’s a great way to have both a unique work outing and find ways to increase productivity. Want to do something fun and different with your friends? Our array of classes makes for a special and invigoratingly good time!

The 1 Hour Mozart

Designed to be quick yet effective, the 1 hour Mozart is a conversation starter and an all-around great time. You will have the exclusive opportunity to learn about classical music from a professional in the field. This month, The Metropolitan Opera Assistant Conductor will be speaking and also playing excerpts on the piano from your Mozart songs. Enjoy special classical music guests each week as well. It's called Mozart but we talk about different musical pieces or opera every week. Feel free to request a topic in advance.

Oh, and would you like a little wine with your Mozart? We can make that happen too. Just let us know and we can add a sommelier to your event.

Tango

Get summer Fit and Fierce with our new Tango Class.

It's time to bring out those heels that have been closet quarantined! Learn dance choreography from international stage dancers while focusing on building confidence and finding your own style. Yes, it is an excuse to put on your favorite heels and show them off.

Taught by an international Ballroom/ Latin Dancer, classes are 45 or 60 minutes long. This includes a 15 min warm up /conditioning, 30 min walk and dance choreography. All levels are welcome.

We offer different styles/songs of your choice.

Meditation/Stretch Yoga

Relax and regenerate in the comfort of your own environment. This 45 or 60 minute Mindfulness class is just for you and your well-being. We offer live musician and teacher. Our Yoga Pros teach advanced, intermediate and beginner levels.

What is Victoria Opera House response to COVID-19?

We had an extremely powerful and motiving women's day event on March 8th with only female performers. We opened the evening with modern dance followed by four uniquely different singers. Each voice differed in range. Our night was accompanied by a pianist. Each song was paired with a wine that was brought by the Sommelier sisters.

Each song, or aria as we call it in opera, started with an english spoken first-person character dialogue. The dialogue set the stage to the arias passionate confession of love or disgust of greed. The distinct fruity or wood taste of the wine matched the emotion of each phrase of the song. When the performance was over we talked about what it was like to be a women in the arts.

Our singers were representative of many different nationalities and our music represented different cultures and languages. In the end though, the group of about 80 females and males were all united. We left feeling stronger than before. We were about to enter a crisis yet we knew already from that one evening in the Vinyl Room of a Private Members Only Club, that we were going to get through this pandemic together. As the doors closed in New York March 17th and we walked into the unknown, I was reassured by that one performance. The only thing that came to my mind was, how do I reach more people?! How do I share this unequivocal gift of unity.

The answer came to me not much later when I realized all my fabulous music friends, singers and dancers were out of a job and the public was without a show. I started asking performers what other talents they had or if they would be interested in teaching and I created virtual shows. Virtual wine and music packages, meditation and music, musicology classes, showcase etc.

The thought of stopping and not offering art never occurred to me. As a woman and entrepreneur this is what I do. I picture myself in a box and then I try to work my way out of it. For a long time my box was just a brown Amazon box but I end up also making that into a nicer softer green and figured I rather work my way out of a Tiffany box instead. I'm laughing, but seriously, this way of looking at the issue at hand and working my way through it has allowed me to push through one step at a time. I know it is just the beginning.

I also used this time to work creatively on my projects as an opera singer, and composer. The more I dig deeper into art the more I am able to offer meaningful and inspiring performances. As an Artistic Director, I not only have to understand what the musicians/singers need to create the best performance but also what the audience needs to have the best experience.

We are able to offer the best shows because we take into consideration not only the performance but your needs, your guests and the venue space. I don't really see too many other companies doing that for events and personal performances. You really have to listen and understand the whole picture to be able to create a beautiful untouchable moment.

Moments are really all we have in life and our memories are what keeps us youthful. Performance is there to accompany your moment and fill in the pieces where words can not. It's pure expression.

When we, as a community, can fully embrace diversity, we will be able to create the most joyous, beautiful performance of all. I'm not burdened by the past ignorance and I, myself, am aware of the hardships of the future, but I will continue to walk towards the light of unity and continue to bring forth performances with this as my goal.

Classical Music in the Modern World

In a society focused on the latest technology, dance crazes, and what is trending on social media, it is easy to understand why so many believe the art of classical music is, in many ways, irrelevant. However, with more music being produced in today’s era than ever before, and with many artists drawing inspiration from classical pieces, this old art form is far from dead.

Over the centuries, classical music has transformed itself to become a building block, setting the framework for musicians of all types today. Many studies have even shown that learning or listening to classical music can have a wide variety of benefits.

Whether you are interested in rock, pop or even rap, the musical influence from classical composers, though sometimes hidden, can become clear the more you study music history. Further, classical composers such as Bach, Schubert and Mozart, despite how long ago their music was composed remain relevant because it is a major factor in the evolution of music and its genres.

An example of music’s evolution due to one of these composers was when Bach wrote the piece Prelude and Fugue Number 20 in A Minor, a composition that combined Bach’s classical style with a more modern approach, which was later deemed the first Jazz song. Also, the structure of almost every popular song in today’s musical era can be traced back to Schubert’s creation of the three minute, verse-chorus based song.

Schubert, though he was a classical composer, wanted to create short melodic songs that everyone could enjoy. This led him to write hundreds of pieces, perfecting the type of music that we are very familiar with today. Mozart similarly to Schubert came up with his own structure of music in which many of his pieces were simplistic in comparison to the earlier work of Bach. Mozart found that a four chord melody, similar to that of modern pop and rock music, though simple, could be beautiful. This simple method allowed him to become one of the most well known composers of all time.

Though the roots of music are important, classical music’s reach extends further than just a step in music’s evolution. In fact, many popular artists in today’s music industry have a close relationship to classical music. A large portion of today’s musicians grew up playing some sort of classical instrument such as the piano or violin, because reading music is such a transferable skill in the music industry.

The relationship between modern and classical music is especially shown with artists such as Onerepublic, Coldplay, U2, Justin Bieber, Jon Bellion, Childish Gambino, Adele, Avicii. Many more have used or adapted classical music into their works. If you still believe that classical music is irrelevant go see The Piano Guys or 2 Cello's youtube channel, and watch how they deconstruct many popular tunes with classical instruments.

Playing or listening to classical music has a wide variety of benefits. Both playing or listening to music can be a great stress reliever. It has been proven that playing any type of music can increase a person’s intelligence. This is due to the fact that music can relate to so many other academic subjects. The way in which musical notes are written in a set of different fractions help with early math skills. They help give real examples of how numbers can be broken down and even multiplied by a set tempo.

Once you are able to play a piece or song, music gives you a sense of accomplishment and can boost your overall confidence. Playing music, especially at high levels, can increase one’s creativity. Since music education stimulates your emotional and cognitive abilities, it can allow your brain to think in new and different ways.

Overall, whether you have learned several different instruments, or simply listen to music, the influence of classical music is undeniable. Though many believe classical music is a dying art form, its longevity allows for it to remain relevant in today’s society.

If you have children in your life, then you have surely heard the cries of “I am bored!” echoing throughout your halls at one point or another. We are quite sure this has been truer than ever over the last year.

We know that it is important to provide your kiddos with entertainment experiences that will nurture their growth and development. With these goals in mind, our amazing staff of arts educators and enthusiasts have developed multiple stages to keep kids of all ages healthy and entertained through enriching experiences in music and dance. Let’s take a look.

Music education has been proven through multiple studies to help children develop critical thinking skills, the ability to work as a team, and to increase their performance in school and on exams. What parent or caregiver wouldn’t want these types of advantages for the children in their care?

The music education programs we offer even include a snack time component at the end of each class where those attending are provided with a healthy snack and nutrition discussion.

Why do we spend this nutrition time with our kids when it would be easier to send them out the door with a bag of chips? It is simple.
